Northeast Ohio food drives expected to attract hundreds of families
CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - There will be several food distribution sites in Northeast Ohio Wednesday and officials said hundreds of families are expected to attend.
The government shutdown has now lasted for 36 days and has stopped federal programs, like SNAP, and also left federal workers without paychecks.

In Cleveland, the May Dugan Center will open their pantry from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The center is located at 4115 Bridge Ave.
A representative from the May Dugan Center said they have expanded its food pantry capacity by 80% to meet a “dramatic increase” in demand as 190,000 people in Cuyahoga County lost their SNAP benefits.
The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank will have more food distribution sites the rest of the week:
The pantry in Stark County will be open on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1365 Cherry Ave. NE.
The pantry in Akron is located at 350 Opportunity Parkway and will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.
The Akron-Canton’s Regional Foodbank says they’re feeling the crunch, it’s not just their pantry distribution, they also supply 600 different soup kitchens and other food distribution sites.
″Today we’re going to distribute about 230,000 pounds of food to our network of partners. On a typical day, it’s about 135,000 to 150,000,“said Dan Flowers, the CEO of the Foodbank.
Flowers says foodbanks are meant to supplement people’s food needs, not replace their needs so they’re experiencing a massive uptick in visits.
The need is so large that normal donations are not cutting it and they’re having to purchase more food than normal.
This Saturday they are hosting a large donation drop off from 9 a.m. to noon at their main campus and Stark County campus.
