Canton Fire saves residents, 2 dogs from apartment fire on Christmas night

CANTON, Ohio (WOIO) - The Canton Fire Department was able to save multiple residents and two dogs from an apartment fire on Christmas night.

According to a release from the Canton Fire Department, at around 10:55 p.m., crews responded to a fire at a side by side duplex in the 220 block of Lawn Avenue SW.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire coming out of one of the windows. One woman had already evacuated.

Crews then removed a man and woman from the adjacent unit for their safety.

Firefighters said they were also able to rescue two dogs.

According to the release, the fire was quickly knocked.

The unit where the fire started was heavily damaged and will be able to be reoccupied, firefighters said. The other unit was moderately damaged by smoke, but also cannot be occupied due to the power being disconnected from the building.

The Red Cross was called for the woman in the first unit, but the man and woman from the other unit left the scene, and their status is unknown.

One firefighter was minorly injured, but remained on duty.

No other injuries were reported.

According to the release, the fire caused an estimated $70,000 in damage and loss.

Canton Fire said the origin and cause of the fire is still under investigation.
