Local doctor indicted for assaulting infant, leaving baby with numerous broken bones

PERRYSBURG, Ohio (WTVG) - A local doctor is on leave after he was arrested in a child endangerment case that left an infant with numerous broken bones.

Dr. Hanuman Gowda, 31, of Perrysburg, was a doctor at ProMedica Hospital in Monroe. He was arrested Jan. 9 and booked into the Wood County jail.

On Feb. 4, a Wood County grand jury indicted him on six counts of endangering children, five counts of felonious assault and one count of domestic violence.

Filings show the courts issued a no contact order, prohibiting Gowda from seeing the victim.

Toledo Hospital staff checked out a 10-week-old baby who had suffered numerous bone fractures of both arms, upper and lower parts of both legs and three ribs, the Perrysburg Police report said.

A hospital body scan showed the fractures happened across multiple incidents, as they were in various states of healing.

Gowda and another person had taken the child to get checked out on Jan. 4 because it appeared the baby was in pain, the police report said. The two denied knowing how any of the injuries happened.

The other caregiver told officials that only she and Gowda had cared for the baby since birth, according to police.

Hospital staff thought the injuries were not accidental and reported concerns of potential child abuse to authorities. Gowda was charged on Jan. 9.

Authorities have not outlined a possible motive.

Court records show his bond was set at $250,000.

A spokesperson for ProMedica confirmed in a statement Gowda is a resident physician and is now on leave:

“We are aware that Dr. Hanuman Gowda was recently arrested in Ohio and charged with crimes unrelated to his workplace. ProMedica has placed the resident physician on administrative leave. We will work with and support the involved authorities as appropriate. The safety and care of our patients and their families remain our top priority.”
