Grand jury indicts man who allegedly fatally shot 2 people on I-71

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A Cuyahoga County Grand Jury indicted a Cleveland man accused of fatally shooting two people on I-71 last month.

Nishawn Wood, 30, was indicted on the charges of:

  • Aggravated murder
  • Murder
  • Felonious assault
  • Attempted murder
  • Having weapons while under disability
  • Discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises

The shooting happened around 1:40 a.m. on Dec. 20, 2025 in the area of I-71N and the I-490 split.

When Cleveland police officers arrived, they found a car crashed into a wall and a man and a woman who had been shot.

The woman, identified as Emerald Vanderhorst, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man, identified as Jordan King, 31, was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

According to Cleveland EMS, a woman in her 30s refused to go to the hospital.

On Monday, officers arrested 30-year-old Nishawn Wood in connection with the double shooting.

Cleveland police said detectives used technology and investigative resources, including the Division’s Real Time Crime Center, to identify and locate the Wood.

Wood was taken into custody without incident on Jan. 5.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 16.
