28-year-old man shot and killed in Akron near University campus

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - The Summit County Medical Examiner and Akron Police Department are investigating the homicide of a 28-year-old man, who was shot and killed Tuesday morning in Akron.

The shooting occurred just blocks away from the University of Akron campus.

“It’s downtown Akron, so I’ve heard some stories, but hearing it being so near campus is kind of crazy,” said second-year University of Akron student Maram Abzeljawad.

Around 10:30 am, Akron Police and EMS responded to a residence in the 500 block of Nash Street for a shooting.

When first responders arrived on scene, they found Daivan Floyd lying on the living room floor with a gunshot wound.

Daivan Floyd was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not yet made an arrest related to the shooting.

This marks the second shooting near the University of Akron area in two weeks.

21-year-old David Green was shot and killed on January 25th in an apartment on Sherman Street.

“I kind of expected it when I decided to come here, like maybe dangerous things would happen like that,” second-year student Sarah Abdallah.

19 News reached out to the University of Akron for a statement regarding the school’s safety plan and the string of incidents near its campus. No spokesperson has responded at this time.

For now, students plan to rely on the safety steps they’ve been using since freshman year.

“Just to like stick with someone you know to walk to your classes to make sure you’re safe,” Abdallah said.
