Cleveland Clinic Akron General resumes normal visitation after water main break
AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - The Cleveland Clinic Akron General shared that it resumed normal visitation hours on Wednesday after a water main break on Saturday morning.
The break was on a 12-inch line right in front of the emergency room, on the other side of the street.
According to the city of Akron, the break happened at 3:52 a.m. Saturday morning, and Akron water crews were on site soon after.
This caused outpatient cardiac, radiation oncology, and radiology appointments to be canceled at its downtown campus at 1 Akron General Avenue, the Cleveland Clinic’s Joe Milicia, Senior Director of Communications, said.
According to Milicia, the emergency is off diversion and open for ambulances at its downtown campus.
As cleanup continues, the hospital is currently not taking trauma cases, but all hospitalized patients will continue to receive care.
The hospital was closed to general visitation since Sunday, but has since resumed as of Wednesday.
The Akron water team is assisting the hospital with pumping water out of the facilities.
The city said the main hospital building is the only building that appeared to be affected, with no other buildings downtown.
The city also said it did not need to issue a boil advisory, as there was plenty of pressure in the area.
Emergency Departments at Akron General’s health and wellness centers in Bath, Green and Stow are open as well, the Cleveland Clinic said.
On Saturday, 19 News spoke with Oscar Quinteros.
He said that after days of labor and the birth of his newborn daughter, his wife’s hospital room had no water.
“We fought for 4 days trying to get this baby out, and finally the baby is here, and she wants to relax, and she can’t even get a drink of water,” said Quinteros.
19 News gave him a look at the video obtained by 19 News from another patient inside the hospital. It shows the building flooded with water.
