(Gray News) — If you have an older Kindle model, you may want to think about upgrading.

Starting May 20, Amazon will no longer support Kindle models released in 2012 or earlier.

This means you will not be able to purchase, borrow or download new books on these devices. You also will not be able to register these devices to an Amazon account.

Amazon also warns that if you deregister or factory reset an impacted device, you will not be able to reregister it or use it in any way.

The following Kindle devices are affected:

  • Kindle 1st Generation
  • Kindle 2nd Generation
  • Kindle DX
  • Kindle DX Graphite
  • Kindle Keyboard (3rd Generation)
  • Kindle 4
  • Kindle Touch
  • Kindle 5
  • Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation

You will still be able to read books that are already downloaded on your device, as long as you remain logged in and do not deregister or reset the device.

Amazon said if you purchase a newer Kindle model — any device released after 2012 — you will be able to access your entire current Kindle library on it.

How to tell what type of Kindle you have

If you are not sure what type of Kindle you have, follow these directions.

You will be directed to the “Manage Your Devices” page on your Amazon account (you will be prompted to log into your account).

Under “Amazon Devices,” you will see your Kindle. Click the icon, and it will show you what type of Kindle you have.
