Pedestrian killed, 2 drivers hurt in multi-vehicle Akron crash; impairment suspected

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - Akron police officers responded to a serious accident early Saturday morning involving multiple vehicles and a pedestrian.

According to the Akron Police Department, officers were called to the area of West Market Street and South Highland Avenue at approximately 2:05 a.m.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a red Chrysler 300 was traveling westbound on West Market Street at a high rate of speed when it struck a 35-year-old man who was crossing the street.

The man was pronounced deceased on scene, police said.

After striking the pedestrian, the Chrysler, operated by a 45-year-old woman, continued westbound and struck the rear of a Buick Encore before colliding with two parked vehicles.

The woman and driver of the Buick, a 57-year-old man, were taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General with serious, non non-life threatening injuries.

Akron Police said the Accident Reconstruction Unit responded to conduct an investigation.

Traffic officers believe that speed was a factor in the crash and observed evidence that the driver might have been impaired.

The crash remains under investigation.

Akron Police said its thoughts are with the friends and family who are impacted by the tragic loss.
