CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The amount of death sentences dealt out in Cuyahoga County in 2019 is the most in any other U.S. county, according to a new study.
Data compiled by the Death Penalty Information Center shows that Cuyahoga County imposed death in three capital punishment cases.
In 2019, the three men sentenced to death include:
- Joseph McAlpin - Represented himself in trial and was convicted for the 2017 execution-style murders of Michael Kuznik and Trina Tomola at a Cleveland car dealership.
- Thomas Knuff Jr. - Sentenced in August for the 2017 murders of Regina Copabianco and John Mann in Parma Heights.
- Matthew Nicholson - Received death sentence in November for fatally shooting his girlfriend’s two children in front of her in 2018.
Cuyahoga County judges sentenced five convicts to death over the past two years, including the three in 2019.
Executions in Ohio are currently paused because of a lack of effective lethal drugs.
As of Dec. 18, there are 140 Ohio inmates on death row.
