Willoughby woman jumps out 3rd-floor window during standoff, not seriously injured, police say

WILLOUGHBY, Ohio (WOIO) - A woman was hospitalized for medical and psychological treatment after jumping out of a third-floor window during a standoff, the Willoughby Police Department confirmed.

Willoughby first responders were sent to Ethan Way condominiums off of SR-91 around 6 a.m. on Feb. 13 for a disturbance report of a family member in possession of a firearm, according to Det. Lt. John Begovic.

Begovic said the husband and daughter were able to leave the home while his 49-year-old wife was still inside.

Officers set up a perimeter around the condo and started to negotiate with the wife to leave the home, said Begovic.

But the woman stopped talking to officers after several hours, Begovic stated, so another family arrived and helped negotiators speak with her again.

Officers were able to get in the condo, but the woman refused to comply with officers, according to Begovic.

Begovic said the woman ran to an upstairs bedroom and and then jumped out of a third-floor window.

She was secured as paramedics from the Willoughby Fire Department arrived on scene, Begovic.

Begovic confirmed she did not suffer serious injuries from jumping out the window, but she was taken to Hillcrest Hospital for medical and psychological treatment.

A firearm was found at the scene, according to Begovic.

The scene was cleared around 10 a.m.
