Teen arrested in fatal Akron shooting of 47-year-old man: Police

AKRON: Ohio (WOIO) - A teenager is facing charges following Friday’s fatal shooting of a 47-year-old man.

Akron police Cpt. Michael Miller says the man was shot in the chest in the 1300 block of S. Arlington Street and dropped off 0.6 miles away in the 800 block of E. Wilbeth Road, which is where officers found him at approximately 11:24 p.m.

Miller confirmed investigators arrested the 16-year-old boy on charges of felonious assault at around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, where a handgun and other evidence were recovered.

The teen is currently being held in the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.

Miller said the teen shot the victim during an altercation.

Miller confirmed investigators will be adding murder-related charges to the crime.

“I thank the detectives for their quick work in this case,” said Akron Mayor Shammas Malik. “This case is particularly heartbreaking knowing the age of the suspect and the fact that an altercation escalated to a man losing his life. The availability of guns to our young people and the lack of judgement are major factors contributing to violent crime and we will continue to address both as we work to make our community safer.”
