Multiple people hurt in crash involving Cardinal Local Schools bus: Sheriff

MIDDLEFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WOIO) - Geauga County Sheriff’s Deputies are currently investigating a crash involving a Cardinal Local School District bus.

The crash happened at approximately 7:35 a.m. in the 16700 block of Kinsman Road in Middlefield Township.

GCSO confirmed students were on the bus at the time of the crash, which involved two other cars.

Middlefield Fire Department officials said a sanitary truck hit the stopped bus because of the sun in the driver’s eyes. A second car then hit the back of the truck before rolling over.

MFD officials initially said on scene the six children on board were treated and released to their parents, who were advised to get their children checked out at local hospitals.

First responders transported the drivers of the car and truck to local hospitals and were treated for minor injuries, MFD officials said.

Cardinal Local Schools Superintendent Jack Cunningham said four children were on the bus, none of which were hurt.

The Middlefield Fire Chief later said five students were on the bus at the time of the crash.

GCSO officials confirmed the Ohio State Highway Patrol is handling the investigation into the crash.

clarification: 19 News previously received information saying that six children that were on board of the bus at the time of the crash and were hurt. The Cardinal Local School District confirmed four students were on board and none of them were hurt. This story has been updated to reflect these changes.
