1 dead, 1 injured in I-77 shooting near Cuyahoga Heights, suspect arrested: Police

NEWBURGH HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO) - Police arrested a man after a shooting on I-77 near Cuyahoga Heights Sunday evening that left one person dead and another injured, according to authorities.

Cuyahoga Heights Police Chief Brian Sturgill said the 9:25 p.m. shooting killed a Garfield Heights man. A 59-year-old woman, also from Garfield Heights, sustained injuries but was treated and released.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased victim as 57-year-old David Perez.

The family told 19 News the suspect is known to the victim and followed the victims after a party before the shooting.

In a 911 call to authorities obtained by 19 News, the reporting party saw the victim’s car swerving between lanes and riddled with bullets.

Bratenahl police officers found the suspect, 29-year-old Ian Rich, driving on I-90 at 10:50 p.m., according to a department-issued statement, and took him into custody.

Body-worn camera footage released to 19 News showed officers arrest Rich without incident. A dog, inside the suspect’s car, also was retrieved by arresting officers.

The Cuyahoga Heights Police Department have not specified the motives or circumstances behind the shooting.

CHPD says the incident remains under investigation.
