Sentencing for men convicted of mass shooting in Cleveland’s Warehouse District

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The two men convicted in a mass shooting in Cleveland’s Warehouse District last summer were sentenced Tuesday by Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Jennifer O’Donnell.

The shooter, Jaylon Jennings, was sentenced to 16-21 years in prison.

“Your conduct that night was no different than anyone who commits mass murder,” said Judge O’Donnell.

Get-away driver Kevin Del Valle-Salaman pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and obstructing justice earlier this year. He was sentenced to three years of probation.

On July 9, 2023, nine people were shot around 2:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of W. 6th Street. All survived their injuries.

One of the victims testified during Tuesday’s sentencing.

“I’m standing on one foot right now, holding the other one up because of the pain,” said Sierra Maben. “If I walk too long my left foot just becomes a weight”.

According to Jennings’ arrest warrant, he saw several of the victims inside Rumor Bar & Lounge and “purposely attempted to cause the death of nine individuals by intentionally retrieving a firearm.”

In court Tuesday, Jennings said that’s not necessarily true.

“My intentions of going out that night was never to cause harm, to nobody, “ said Jennings. ”I don’t know honestly what transpired or what went left, but I do take full responsibility for that”.

Cleveland police said Jennings got the weapon from the trunk of Del Valle-Salaman’s car parked in a lot on W. 6th Street.

Jennings was arrested July 11, 2023 at a home in the 2900 block of Toledo Ave. in Lorain.

On July 17, Jennings pleaded guilty to nine counts of attempted murder, 18 counts of felonious assault, two counts of having weapons under disability, one count of grand theft, and one count of receiving stolen property.
