Arraignment for Michigan man indicted in deadly shooting on Put-In-Bay

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio (WOIO) - The 21-year-old Michigan man indicted for the deadly shooting on Put-in-Bay is set to be arraigned Thursday morning.

An early morning manhunt on July 23 ended with the arrest of Colton Smith, 21, of Michigan, after a shooting left a 39-year-old man dead.

On Wednesday, an Ottawa County Grand Jury indicted Smith on the following charges:

  • One count of murder
  • Two counts of tampering with evidence
  • Three counts of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle
  • One count of illegal possession of a firearm on liquor-permit premises

He is set to be arraigned on these charges on Thursday morning.

Smith is currently being held on a $1 million bond.

According to a release from Put-In-Bay Police, just after midnight on July 23, officers and paramedics responded to a reported shooting at Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille, located at 272 Delaware Avenue.

When first responders arrived, they found the 39-year-old-man with multiple gunshot wounds.

Despite life-saving measures, the man died, according to the release.

There were no other injuries reported.

Put-in-Bay officers contacted the Ottawa County Major Crimes Unit and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations to request assistance with the investigation.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol also provided air support to search for the suspect.

He is locked up at Ottawa County Jail.

Authorities are not looking for any other suspects at this time.

The Ottawa County Major Crimes Unit and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office are handling the investigation, according to the release.
