Hearing for 2 Glenville football players charged after allegedly stealing from Dick’s Sporting Goods
GROVE CITY, Ohio (WOIO) - Two members of the Glenville High School football team charged with theft are scheduled to appear in Grove City Mayor’s Court Wednesday.
Ty Martin, 18, and Eason Hankins, 18, and nine juveniles are accused of stealing merchandise from the Grove City Dick’s Sporting Goods in August.
The alleged incident happened on Aug. 27 around 6 p.m. at the store in the 1600 block of Stringtown Rd.
A store employee called 911 and told dispatch a large group of boys who they believed were from the Glenville football team and had stolen merchandise.
According to the 911 call, the kids “ransacked” the store and left security tags, clothing tags, and empty boxes thrown around.
The amount of the stolen merchandise was $4552.04, according to the police report, and included items such as mouth guards, arm bands, clothing, and football cleats.
When officers arrived at the store, they said they saw several high school aged boys walking to and from the Drury Inn in the 4100 block of Parkway Centre Dr.
The officer said he made contact with a coach from the Glenville team and advised them of the theft situation at the nearby Dick’s Sporting Goods.
According to the police report, Glenville head coach Ted Ginn Sr. turned in two bags of clothing and a pair of football cleats to the police later that evening.
And, Athletic Director Paul Lewis held a players only meeting after some of the merchandise was turned over, said police.
A roster of the football team was also sent over to police and Lewis and Ginn agreed to help officers identify the players involved on the Dick’s Sporting Goods security video.
Glenville was in town to play Olentangy Liberty and beat them 34-13 on Aug. 28. According to game footage, at least two of the suspects, Martin and Hankins, played in that game.
Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) officials said all of the players were suspended from school and are ineligible to participate in two Glenville football games.
