3 Conneaut firefighters injured battling blaze, city manager says

CONNEAUT, Ohio (WOIO) -Three Conneaut firefighters are home recovering Saturday morning after responding to a house fire that left them injured.

According to Conneaut City Manager Nick Sanford, Conneaut Fire responded to a fire around 11 p.m. Friday on Monroe Street west of Mill Street.

When firefighters arrived, they faced heavy fire in the two-story home with some hoarding conditions, firefighters said.

Three firefighters were blocked in by flames on the second floor.

Two jumped onto a metal roof on the first floor while the other clung to the outside of the home and awaited a ladder, firefighters said.

According to a post on Facebook by the Conneaut Fire Fighters Local 651, firefighters had to “declare a mayday on an emergency scene.”

According to Stanford, all three firefighters were taken to the hospital and released with minor injuries.

The post also said the 3 firefighters injured are home and recovering.

“There was an ankle sprain and one fracture, “said city manager Nick Sanford. “We are happy they are safe above all else. That’s what’s important to us”.

No residents of the home were injured and the fire was knocked, Sanford said.

According to Sanford, multiple surrounding agencies responded to provide aid.

WGOJ radio station is next to the home and was also damaged.

The manager Norma Watson, told 19 News the smoke could have damaged their equipment.

But it won’t be for a while until they know the extent.

“We have so much to be thankful for,” said Watson. “It could’ve been a lot worse”.

The Ohio State Fire Marshals are investigating this incident, according to Sanford.
